The 112th Congress opened in the House chamber today pretty much as it left off 2 weeks ago - with Nancy Pelosi still commanding much of the attention and leadership.
While John Boehner was elected the new House Speaker (61st) as expected, Pelosi came within striking distance. She only fell 45 votes short of retaining the Speakership, and 20 of those votes went to others. Therefore, she was closer than the margin suggests.
I though the voice of the people on November 2nd was much, much louder than this. It seems that the House doesn't get it as much as we would have thought. I'm surprised that (1) Pelosi broke with tradition and remained in Congress (a losing Speaker usually retires) and (2) that her party wanted to keep following her.
We have so far to go to get back to the Constitution. Maybe this was just a partisan statement - let's hope so. We need to reject the policies and actions of the 111th Congress and follow the Constitution and fiscal responsibility.
Time is running out on our ability to get it right.
