36 Weeks & Counting

36 weeks from today, we return a Republican majority to the House, elect a new Republican majority in the Senate and choose a new President - too early to tell how that may turn out. Arizona and Michigan vote today on the Republican challenger to the President. Next Tuesday is "Super Tuesday."

Congress is an easy call. The White House is usually a tough call anyway, and the incumbent has an advantage. At any rate, the next many weeks will see lots of ads, debates, and posturing.

Which Number Comes Next?

Remember those quizzes in school when they would give us a series of numbers and we'd have to figure out the pattern and guess the next number or set of numbers? I thought of that when I saw my AR score today - 1360136. Gee, I wonder which number would come next?

He Could Try

The President claims that "neither he nor anyone else" can do anything about gasoline prices? Really? Has he tried?

Has he removed his objection to the Keystone Pipeline and ordered it to commence immediately? Has he withdrawn all of his objections to the permits for offshore drilling so they can begin? Has he commanded his departments to fast-track approval of refinery permits? Has he made it clear that he wants to beat other countries to tapping into the oil off our coasts? Has he issued an Executive Order forbidding the change of gasoline between winter and summer and mandated a single formula year-round? Has he banned ethanol use so that we can commit corn back to the food supply and increase gas mileage at the same time?

Seems like there is a lot he can do about gasoline prices.

Oh, and did I mention that there are thousands of jobs that can be created - and that he can take credit for?

Where Was The Outcry?

The Payroll Tax Extension passed both houses of Congress easily a week ago. In the Senate, it only needed a voice vote.

This was a tough one because we definitely need tax relief but this tax is what has been paying for Social Security. As far as extending unemployment benefits - that's another issue.

I ask where is the outcry, and I'm talking about NAHB and NAR. Rep. Allen West, and like-minded conservatives in the House, voted against the bill - not because they wanted higher taxes, but specifically because they didn't want highwer taxes. Because the bill was allowed to become an emergency measure, other ways of paying for the extension were not explored or vetted.

Part of paying for this "tax relief" is by enacting a tax on all FHA-backed mortgages. For instance, a $200,000 FHA loan will require an extra $10,000 over the 30-year life of the loan as an extra tax to pay for this extension.

Where was NAR to protest? Where was NAHB? Did we receive a call to action? Any notification at all?

When it comes to matters affecting us, our businesses, and our customers, we need to be out-in-front and communicating directly with our legislators.

Daytona will have an entry in the Saturday night Nationwide Series race which carries a conservative political message. Randy MacDonald's Dodge, which he owns and races, is sponsored by the Tea Party - among other sponsors.
